About Me

Like the URL says, I’m Jeff Moore, a linguist living in Tokyo. I teach at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, as well as a few other little side gigs here and there.

I was born and raised in the little farming town of Walla Walla, Washington. I did my undergraduate studies at Washington State University, studying History and Economics, and had a semester abroad in Seville, Spain while I was there.

I moved to Fukuoka, Japan in 2010, where I taught English conversation classes for three years while also learning Japanese. The experience taught me a lot about how we learn languages, and especially about the importance of learning the sound system of a language early on in the process. I moved to Tokyo in 2013 to attend Sophia University, where I got my MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and my PhD in phonetics.

Since coming to Tokyo, I’ve mainly taught English at a bunch of different universities. I’ve taught near-native English majors and returnees from abroad at top-tier institutions. I’ve taught total beginners at less prestigious universities. I’ve taught computer science majors, engineering majors, veterinary medicine majors, and a whole host of others, always trying to focus on the students’ specific needs.
